The victim with the leg chopped off

This picture above is a picture of a victim of fly stone. The picture was patetic. The leg was completely chopped off by a flying stone. As an engineer that also engage in the same operation that resulted in to the accident, I begin to ask myself questions like what could be the reasons why a stone could fly over 500 meter that could also result to this pathetic accident. Relax and let me relay the story of what happened.

The blasting took place in a quarry (name withheld) along lagos-ibadan express road. This is but a very popular company within the city of ibad an and the environs. There happens to be a company owned by an Arabia almost facing the pit of the quarry (name withheld). Although, there has been series of complains from the arabian company telling them about the impact of blasting on the company. Some sources claimed that the quarry has been given a period of vacation from their present location due to residential houses and companies around the location. On this faithful day the fly rock indeed travels over 500 meter to injure this man. It not only injured the man, but also damaged properties worth millions of naira..... You can imagine if the man had died.

Anyway, my epistle is simple the lesson to be learnt here. The nubmer one thing that always come to the mind of any engineer on site is the safety of personnel and properties under his watch. I will advise engineers to be careful with blast designs, and make sure normal procedures are taken before initiation.  Care should be taken to follow the process of safety in explosives handling. Please don't forget to inform explosive ordinance department (anti-born squad) before initiation as this will help in making sure all lives are kept in a good distance from the point of blast. Once again I repeat safety should be on our mind.

The victim as since then been in emergency in hospital, no doubt the leg is condemned and amputated. Eee! It is well. The anti-bomb squad and ministry of mines has since then commenced investigation on the incidence.
